Day of Giving

What drives you?

Everyone has something that drives them. On May 14, we're celebrating #WhatDrivesYou with our biggest fundraising challenge yet — 680 gifts in 24 hours — a nod to the Class of 1968, which is celebrating its 50th Reunion this year. And when you donate, you could drive away a winner.

This year, we held the biggest single-day fundraiser in Pomfret history — and the results are in. In total, 649 donors made 708 gifts, totaling $232,319. For those of you keeping track at home, that is a 100 more gifts than last year, representing an additional $90,000 in contributions over last year. To everyone who participated, thank you!

Ellen Wright, a former trustee and past parent, is the lucky winner of the 2017 Mazda MX-5. Congratulations, Ellen.

In the spring of 1968, a group of senior boys stole a car from a faculty parking lot under the cover of darkness. As students filtered into the Dining Hall for breakfast the next morning, Mr. Sam Brookfield's Ford Mustang stood gleaming in the middle of the room, complete with plates, glasses, and cutlery, as if set for a meal. Fifty years later, trustee Greg Melville ’68 and his wife Susan are celebrating that prank — and the class that pulled it off — by giving away a car of their own, in honor of the Class of 1968's 50th Reunion.

Here's how it works: For every $100 you contribute on May 14, you'll get a chance to win this all-new 2017 Mazda MX-5.

      • 6-speed manual transmission with rear wheel drive
      • 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine
      • Power retractable hardtop roof
      • 7-inch color touchscreen display
      • Bluetooth
      • Bose 9-speaker audio system and Sirius XM satellite radio
      • Push button ignition and remote keyless entry
      • 17-inch alloy wheels with high performance tires
      • Soul red metallic exterior with red and black interior

This year we are aiming to raise 680 gifts in 24 hours. The number of gifts is a direct reference to the Class of 1968, which is celebrating its 50th Reunion this year.

How do I make a gift? On May 14, make your gift online or call the Advancement Office at 860.963.5295 to make your gift over the phone. Mailed contributions must be received by May 14, 2018, along with the remittance card included in your Day of Giving mailer.

I already made a gift this year, does that count? No. We appreciate your support but this is a special standalone opportunity. You are welcome to make an additional gift to the Pomfret Fund on Day of Giving to have a chance to win.

What will my gift support? You can designate your gift to support the budget of a particular program, make your gift in honor of a special person, or leave it unrestricted. The choice is yours.

Besides giving, how can I help make the day a success? Spread the word! When you make your gift, tell your classmates, family, and friends, and encourage them to make a gift. You don't have to be a Pomfret person to win — anyone meeting the eligibility requirements can participate. Post about giving day on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram using the hashtag #WhatDrivesYou. Send an email or call a friend. If you’re not sure what to say, check out the Spread the Word section for ideas. It's located just below this FAQ.

About the Giveaway

For every $100 increment you donate to the Pomfret Fund on giving day, we’ll give you a chance to win an all-new 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club RF, donated by Greg Melville ’68 and Susan Fox. For example, if you donate $400, you’ll receive four chances to win. If you donate $499, you’ll still only receive four chances to win. But if you donate $500, you'll receive five chances to win. And so on.

All online contributions must be received on Monday, May 14, 2018. Mailed contributions must be received by Monday, May 14, 2018, along with a giving day remittance card and/or a written designation. Pledges, pledge payments, matching gifts, and gifts-in-kind are not eligible. Online gifts made prior to the Day of Giving are not eligible.

The recipient of the Miata will be selected in a random drawing held on or around Wednesday, May 16, 2018. The recipient will be notified by phone, mail, and/or email. If the potential recipient cannot be reached after ten (10) days, or if the recipient is found to be ineligible, or if the recipient declines the car, another recipient will be selected. The recipient need not be present to win.

The total approximate retail value of the car is $31,555. The recipient is responsible for all taxes, title, license, registration fees, and insurance required in claiming the vehicle, as well as all other expenses relating to the receipt and use of vehicle, including any travel and transportation costs associated with taking delivery of the vehicle, if applicable. All costs and expenses related to acceptance and use of the car are the sole responsibility of the recipient. No substitution will be allowed and the car may not be redeemed for cash or other consideration.

The recipient must be 18 or older, to be eligible. The recipient must have a current, valid driver’s license, proof of adequate insurance, as required by law, and any other legally required documentation.

The recipient is required to sign an acknowledgment, acceptance, and general release of claims form; and a W9 form.
