College Recommendations

How do I request a college recommendation from my teacher?

A student’s college counselor, not their advisor, will write a letter about them. Additionally, students should request two letters of recommendation from their teachers to supplement their college application. One should be from a math or science teacher, and the other from a humanities teacher.

Students must request at least one letter of recommendation from their teachers before the end of their junior year. They can then request the second at the same time or wait until the fall of their senior year. Students must make the second recommendation request by early October.

Students should speak with their college counselor before requesting a letter of recommendation. If considering a service academy, read their recommendation requirements closely before you ask for any of your recommendations.

When a teacher agrees to write a letter of recommendation, students should ask them to sign the green letter of recommendation sheet. Signed green sheets are to be returned to the college counselor.
