Advanced Biology is a laboratory-centered course focused on teaching students the art of scientific investigation while also providing them with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of biological science at a level consistent with a first-year college (AP level) class. Through laboratory investigations, modeling, case studies, and analysis of authentic scientific data, students will hone their investigative skills. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, inquiry-based experimental design, quantitative data collection, application of inferential statistics, and clear written and visual communication. While developing and using models to explain biological processes, students build a deep understanding of molecular biology, cellular processes, heredity, biotechnology, ecology, and physiology. Students are expected to read primary and secondary scientific literature, construct evidence-based explanations, and communicate scientific ideas clearly. Students work in teams to design, conduct, and analyze the results of controlled experiments, ultimately presenting their findings in a polished poster akin to that used to share undergraduate research. In collaboration with the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI), students will explore regenerative medicine and biofabrication through a problem-based learning model. The unit includes conceptualizing a tissue-engineered medical product to solve a real-world problem and designing a business model to quantify, finance, and market the product.
Departmental approval is required for this course. Open to juniors and seniors who have exceeded expectations in honors biology and honors chemistry.
