This course teaches students to understand and critically analyze the fundamental concepts of United States politics through an in-depth study of the American government, its constitutional foundations, and contemporary discourse. Moving beyond basic civics, students explore the history and evolution of the three branches of government, the pivotal role of the federal judiciary, and the complex mechanics of campaigns and elections. A central theme of the curriculum is the exploration of partisanship and polarization. Students will examine the historical roots and modern drivers of political division, analyzing how these forces shape legislative gridlock, public opinion, and the stability of democratic institutions. Through exposure to a diverse array of primary and secondary sources, alongside a continuous examination of current events, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the historic and modern American political system.
