The Age of British Romanticism occupies a long stretch of English literary history from the late seventeenth- to early-eighteenth centuries. Over that period, many of England’s greatest poets innovated existing poetic forms and created new ones. Major authors in this course may include (but are not limited to) Smith, Barbauld, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Hemans, Shelley, Keats, Byron, and Landon. The course will examine the structural elements of poetry, the ode, epic, and lyrical forms, and the historical and philosophical context of Romanticism. Students will have opportunities to create their own poems using course texts as a model. 

This course utilizes a mixed-level classroom model, offering both Advanced and Standard level options.
