This course is anchored by what is widely regarded as Ernest Hemingway’s defining expatriate novel, The Sun Also Rises, a portrait of disillusioned Americans drifting through 1920s Paris and Spain in the aftermath of World War I. Hemingway was a central figure of the so-called Lost Generation, a circle of American writers who left the United States in search of artistic freedom and personal reinvention abroad. In addition to Hemingway’s novel, students will read selected works by writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and James Baldwin, exploring how Paris shaped their understanding of identity, ambition, race, gender, and what it meant to be American. This course is ideal for students interested in literature, history, and cultural change, and who are prepared to engage deeply with themes of exile, reinvention, and artistic modernism. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to develop critical reading, analytical writing, and discussion skills. 

This course utilizes a mixed-level classroom model, offering both Advanced and Standard level options.
