The Character pillar enables students to learn about their own unique character strengths that help define who they are and how they engage in the world. Students develop and cultivate important resources and skills that allow them to stretch beyond their comfort zone, take risks, and become more resilient to weather life’s inevitable challenges. Together, we practice deepening our understanding of self and others as we work to develop meaningful connections and authentic relationships. 

The Community pillar focuses on our identity as a community and helps students to be known and to know others. Students explore their own cultural stories to share their authentic selves, believing that it is hard to hate someone whose story you know. In this pillar, students come to understand and live the school values of Community, Growth, and Integrity by leaning in toward their classmates, fostering connections across grade levels, and developing genuine care for all aspects of Pomfret School life.

The Being pillar allows students to cultivate healthy habits of mind and body so that they can thrive in this community and beyond. With deliberate practice, students can develop skills to enhance their overall well-being. Sessions focus on developing healthy relationships, caring for physical and mental health, honing tools and strategies to manage stress, and examining how decisions impact self and others.

The Belonging pillar will challenge students to develop a greater awareness and understanding of self and others. Sessions allow students to practice taking the perspective of others so they can act with empathy and create spaces of belonging in this community and in the world beyond Pomfret. Sessions focus on how we cultivate a community where each person is known, included, supported, and connected.
