It was a beautiful fall weekend as we welcomed families to the Hilltop for Family Weekend. The unseasonably warm and sunny weather was the perfect setting for families to reconnect and catch up on the learning and fun at Pomfret.
Families had the opportunity to sit in on classes and see firsthand what their children are learning every day. They explored VISTA, Pomfret’s new state-of-the-art science building, and participated in hands-on experiments. During drop-in sessions, they were introduced to the Foundations of Wellbeing course and the Freshman Arts Immersion Program. They learned about study abroad opportunities, our certificate programs, and enjoyed artwork created in the painting and drawing, ceramics, and recording studios.
After a delicious Harvest Dinner, families were treated to an impressive performance by the Honors Chamber Ensemble, the Honors Contemporary Ensemble — “The Frets” — and the Honors Vocal Ensemble — “The GriffTones.” Wulf Gooding '25, Kylie Corrigan '25, and Haynes McCoy '25 delivered outstanding solo performances.
Head of School Tim Richards gave his State of the School address. He introduced Heather Daly as Pomfret’s next Head of School and discussed the ongoing work by the Heads Group and Board of Trustees to ensure a smooth transition. He also highlighted the steps Pomfret is taking to support what social psychologist Jonathan Haidt calls “the anxious generation,” and shared updates on the school’s shift to competency-based learning.
Throughout the weekend, both students and parents heard from W.P. Carey Speaker Grant Gosselin, dean of undergraduate admission and financial aid at Boston College. Gosselin shared “Lessons from the Road,” providing valuable guidance on successfully navigating the college admissions process. During breakout sessions, he provided insights into the holistic admissions process, while Michael Whalen, director of athletics at Wesleyan University, shared advice for prospective college student-athletes. Laurence Hale '91 P ’20, principal and managing partner at WHZ Strategic Wealth Advisors, gave families tips on paying for college, regardless of income. Whalen and Gosselin joined Cassie Hayward, senior assistant director of admissions at Kenyon College, for a panel discussion on personal statements, the early decision process, and demonstrating interest. After the panel, families connected with more than two dozen schools at the College Exploration Fair.
The weekend culminated in athletic competitions, with most Griffins facing off against Frederick Gunn School and Williston Northampton School. Families cheered from the sidelines as they watched exciting games filled with great sportsmanship.
“This was perhaps the best Family Weekend in my forty-year career,” expressed Richards. And we couldn’t agree more. It was a fantastic weekend for all who attended.
