Remembering Jay Milnor
Corrine Szarkowicz

Former Pomfret School Headmaster Joseph "Jay" Milnor died peacefully on December 28, 2024, at the age of 101.

Under his consequential watch (1961–1973), Pomfret admitted its first African American students and made the strategic leap to co-education. He presided over a transformative period of time for Pomfret, burnishing a legacy of character-building, mentorship, inspiration, and innovation.

Milnor was a man of values and vision who possessed an unwavering sense of integrity, warmth, humor, and discipline. He lived an extraordinary life that profoundly impacted the lives of many others.

Milnor is survived by his four children, Nancy, Scott, Arthur, and Susette ’74, and their spouses; his five granddaughters; and his five great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a family and community who loved him and a legacy of accomplishment and inspiration.

Jay’s family plans to hold a memorial service later this year, and details will be shared when they become available.
