Pomfret Kicks Off NEASC Self-Study
Garry Dow

The School is in the midst of its first reaccreditation process in nearly a decade.

Every ten years, independent schools are asked a deceptively simple question:
How well are you living your mission?

The work begins internally. Faculty, staff, students, parents, trustees, and alumni start by taking a clear-eyed look at what the school does well, where it can grow, and how it can serve students in a changing world. The answers are found in a months-long collective reflection known as the "self-study," which Pomfret began in September.

Pomfret is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. NEASC is a global leader in accreditation and school improvement. More than 1,600 schools worldwide are members, candidates for accreditation, or have achieved accreditation eligibility.

“NEASC accreditation is the gold standard,” says History Teacher Gavin Flood, who is coordinating the effort at Pomfret. “The process is comprehensive, collegial, and deeply introspective."

Accreditation is the most collaborative project a school can undertake, clarifying blind spots and surfacing priorities that can help shape future initiatives. The entire process is underpinned by NEASC's Standards for Accreditation, which require schools like Pomfret to evaluate every aspect of their program and operation, including:

  • Mission and philosophy
  • Governance and leadership
  • Academic program and assessment
  • Student wellbeing and residential life
  • Faculty professional growth
  • Campus culture and belonging
  • Facilities, finances, and sustainability

As the name suggests, the self-study phase is designed to be exceptionally candid by asking adult stakeholders to consider whether or not their daily practices truly reflect the School's aspirations. The student perspective is equally important, and often becomes a catalyst for change.

For current and prospective families, accreditation is the ultimate trust signal. It affirms that Pomfret meets and often exceeds nationally recognized standards for quality, accountability, and care. It also means families can rest easy knowing that any credit earned here will be recognized by colleges and universities.

"The self-study invites us to slow down and really look at ourselves," says Flood. "It’s about asking honest questions and then listening carefully for honest answers.”

Next year, for phase two, a team of educators from NEASC-accredited schools will travel to Pomfret to formally evaluate the School and recommend an accreditation status based on the results.
