Mystery on the Hilltop

Pomfret School Theater stages Clue.

For its fall production, Pomfret School Theater presented the classic whodunit and sharp-witted satire Clue. Inspired by the beloved board game that has fueled decades of friendly and suspicious competition, Clue came to life on stage with a familiar cast of colorful suspects, each guarding secrets and hiding motives. Set against the backdrop of 1950s McCarthyism and infused with humor and high farce, the production channeled an era marked by paranoia and fear of exposure.

Six mysterious guests arrive at a secluded mansion on a stormy night, where the evening quickly takes a deadly turn. As bodies pile up and accusations fly, Wadsworth, the butler (played by Remy Jacquet ’26), scrambles to keep order while chaos reigns. The guests — Miss Scarlet (Jenna Vertefeuille ’26), Mrs. Peacock (Lydia Warren ’26), Mrs. White (Josephine Maguire ’28), Colonel Mustard (Andrew Riccardi ’28), Professor Plum (Mirin Supokawate ’27), and Mr. Green (Lars J. Han ’27) — race to unmask the killer and keep their own scandalous secrets from coming to light.

"One of my favorite things about this show was being able to do an accent," said Remy. "I have always loved doing accents and impressions, so Wadsworth was a really fun challenge to take on!

Professor Plum accuses Colonel Mustard.

"Clue has been a joy to bring to life. The cast and crew fully embraced the humor, suspense, and absurdity of the play, while bringing out its subtle echoes of 1950s paranoia," said History Teacher and Pomfret School Theater Director Gavin Flood. "The show demands precision at every turn, from the intricate timing of the physical comedy to the technical elements that keep the action moving. What began as a chaotic game of secrets and surprises has become a story about truth and trust. I am so proud of the creativity and teamwork that made this production possible." This production marked Flood's directorial debut with Pomfret School Theater. He was assisted by Student Assistant Director Victoria Frankovic ‘27, who is also new to the program.

"Clue has been by far my favorite show I’ve been in here at Pomfret," says Jenna, who played Miss Scarlet. "The costumes, set, lights, and cast have been truly amazing and so much fun."

Behind the scenes, the cast and crew worked tirelessly to bring the mystery to life. Early in the process, they visited Roseland Cottage, a genuine Gothic Revival home in nearby Woodstock, for inspiration. The technical team, led by Stage Manager Graham Davis ’28 and Artist-in-Residence JP Jacquet, designed and built a vibrant, elaborate set featuring a turntable and rotating walls that let actors dash from room to room in true farcical style. Avery Bird ’26 added a showstopping touch with a dazzling chandelier he designed and constructed — a centerpiece that both advanced the plot and delighted the audience.

The chandelier, created and constructed by Avery Bird ’26, crashes onto Mr. Green.

"The original plan was for the chandelier to fall at full speed, so I had to figure out how to make it both safe and durable. That’s what led me to design it the way I did — keeping the look of a chandelier while minimizing the volume. I eventually settled on hula hoops because they were lightweight yet sturdy," shared Avery. "For each show, I carefully untie it, let the string run through my hands, and use friction —  plus a pair of gloves —  to control the fall speed."

From sharp dialogue to perfectly timed chaos, Clue delivered an evening of suspense, satire, and laughter — reminding audiences that mystery is always best served with a dash of humor.
