Game-Changing Summer

Our student-athletes aren’t the only ones staying on top of their game this summer. Director of Athletics and Afternoon Programs and Head Girls Lacrosse Coach Mo Gaitán is spending a portion of her summer at the USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. Gaitán is serving as a facilitator for Athletes Unlimited (AU) Pro Lacrosse and is learning from some of the best women’s lacrosse players in the world.

As a facilitator, Gaitán assists her team’s captain with strategy and logistics. There are no coaches in the five-week league, and the captains are decided weekly based on who is at the top of the leaderboard. “I’m here to make the captain’s vision a reality,” says Gaitán. “When the captain is on the field, I help execute the game plan and strategy she set forth.” She also assists the captain during the weekly drafting of teams. “The drafts are exciting. It’s interesting to be behind the scenes, helping to balance the team.”

After the draft, Gaitán works with a new captain and her team of some of the best lacrosse players in the world. “These athletes are playing at a level I have never experienced,” says Gaitán. “It’s inspiring to see these professionals putting so much time and energy into their game and the little details.”

With her front-row seat to see how these elite athletes respond and adapt to different game situations, Gaitán is absorbing everything she can. “I am filing away little nuggets of information and preparing to install what I have learned and experienced when the Griffins are preparing for and are in the heart of next lacrosse season.”

Gaitán is learning off the field, too. “It’s such an amazing opportunity to be a part of this new league and the next generation of women’s professional sports,” says Gaitán. “I am picking all the organizers' brains to find new things to integrate and implement into Pomfret’s athletic programming.”
