Dedication & Distinction
Corrine Szarkowicz

Two campus spaces were recently named for outgoing Head of School Tim Richards, and his wife Anne.

Surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, and members of the Board of Trustees, Head of School Tim Richards and his wife, Anne, were honored for fourteen years of distinguished service with the naming of two facilities built during their tenure. In a heartfelt ceremony, Pomfret School formally dedicated the Tim & Anne Richards Health and Wellness Center and the Anne Richards Yoga Studio, celebrating their lasting leadership and transformative impact on the school community.

Board of Trustees Chair Justin Klein ’65 unveiled two commemorative plaques, each highlighting the Richards' significant contributions. These facilities were made possible through the generosity of Greg Melville ’68 and his wife, Susan Fox, whose gift was initially given anonymously. Melville, a longtime trustee and chair of Pomfret’s Amplify campaign, shared fond memories from the early days of Tim and Anne’s leadership, recalling how their vision and priorities shaped the school’s future. When Tim recognized the need to replace the cramped and outdated health center in the Main House basement, Melville stepped forward to help bring that vision to life. Years later, upon Tim's announcement that he would be stepping down, Melville expressed his hope that the Richards would be honored through the dedication and naming of the center.

Together, the Health and Wellness Center and Yoga Studio reflect the Richards’ shared belief: what’s best for students is best for Pomfret. Completed in 2018, the Health and Wellness Center was designed as a state-licensed infirmary offering 24-hour care, private rooms for observation, and dedicated counseling spaces. Inspired by Anne’s vision, the project expanded to include a yoga and meditation studio — a tranquil space within Strong Field House created to nurture mind, body, and spirit.

During his tenure as Pomfret’s twelfth head of school, Tim Richards led the school through a period of growth and transformation. Under his leadership, Pomfret adopted bold strategic plans, reimagined its approach to teaching and learning, and prioritized student wellness like never before. Anne, a beloved teacher, coach, and advisor, was equally instrumental in founding Pomfret’s yoga program and weaving wellbeing into the fabric of daily life.

“Anne and I are deeply moved by this honor,” Tim said in his remarks. “But more than that, we are grateful that this center reflects the values we care about — wellness, community, and helping students become their best selves.” He extended his thanks to the Board of Trustees, Greg Melville and Susan Fox, and the dedicated health and counseling professionals who bring the center's mission to life every day.

These newly named spaces are more than just buildings; they are enduring reflections of a philosophy rooted in purpose, meaning, and wellbeing, and fitting tributes to two individuals who made those ideals central to life on the Hilltop.
