Fourteen months ago, Brendan and I loaded our lives into the back of a moving truck and headed east for Pomfret. By the time school started two months later, we were mostly settled. I was excited, but I was also a little nervous.

As I begin my second year as your head of school, that feeling of nervousness has given way to a profound sense of possibility. And now, we get to begin again.

Last year, I compared the opening of school to cracking open a new book — full of anticipation, unexpected plot twists, and the promise of a meaningful journey. As a lifelong reader, I still love that metaphor. But this year I have a much better sense of the characters, the setting, and where this story might take us.



In just a few days, returning students will reunite with friends and faculty, while our newest Griffins will discover Pomfret for the first time. Together, they will begin the challenging and deeply important work of growing into the people they are quickly becoming.



Moments like this remind me of a line from Walt Whitman's short work O Me! O Life! made famous by Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society.
