Golf

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Pomfret School Golf Team boasts a quite impressive record over the past ten years and plays its home matches at Quinnatisset Country Club, a hidden gem in the quiet corner of Connecticut. We also play tournaments at other extraordinary golf courses including The Kittansett Club, The Course at Yale, Pleasant Valley, and Wannamoisett Country Club. We play our end-of-year tournament in a notable 24-team field including some of the strongest prep-school golf programs in New England including Andover, Choate, Exeter, and Hotchkiss. We have had recent graduates go on to play at Villanova University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and Bates College. Our focus is playing by the rules, competitive attitude, competitive scores and, most importantly, sportsmanship. All home matches are played at: Quinnatisset Country Club.

COACHES

  • Brian Rice
    Head Coach
A seventeen-year veteran in the classroom, Brian was appointed as Pomfret School's Mathematics Department Chair in 2009. Prior to joining Pomfret in 2003, he taught at Woodstock Academy and at Canterbury School, where he won the best teacher award and had the yearbook dedicated to him. In college, his concentrations were in calculus and statistics, specifically in actuarial science. Brian found his niche in education after working for an actuarial firm in Hartford, CT and for the United States Navy in New London, CT as a private contractor, working in a highly classified environment developing defense tactics for nuclear submarines. In addition to his work in schools, Brian was the director of an SAT prep class for years and was involved in both instruction and question development for the SAT. Throughout his career, Brian has taught math at all levels, more recently Advanced Calculus and Statistics. As department chair, he has focused on curriculum development, including advancing the use of technology in the mathematics classroom. At Pomfret, Brian coaches varsity golf, serves as an advisor, and coordinates the math extra help center. He has two children who are currently Pomfret School students and they recently moved on campus.
  • Cooper Hemphill
    Assistant Coach
Having been raised on a boarding school campus by a family of teachers, Cooper knew from a young age that he wanted to be a teacher himself. While attending Bowdoin college, where he majored in Math and Classics and played on the golf team, Cooper explored his passion for teaching through tutoring and working in local elementary schools. Cooper then spent five years teaching and coaching at the Cardigan Mountain School and completing his Master's degree at the University of Georgia before joining the Pomfret Community. Cooper's wife, Tory Dobbin, is a French teacher here at Pomfret, and they reside on campus with their adorable corgi, Loon.
