Football

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Varsity Football has a long tradition of excellence. Fielding its first team in 1894, Pomfret has established a reputation as one of the most successful programs in New England. Beginning in the 2016 season, Pomfret has partnered with three schools to bring 8-Person football to New England. The goal of the initiative is to provide a viable, long-term alternative to the game in its traditional form. The Griffins will play a seven game regular season with playoffs in the final week. We hope to see you on the sidelines this fall.

COACHES

  • Brian Geyer
    Head Coach
Brian became a member of Pomfret's science faculty in 2002. In addition to teaching all levels of physics and several science electives he coordinates the school's robotics extra-curricular team. Brian also coaches the varsity football team and oversees the Foundry, Pomfret's makerspace. He and his wife, Sharon, who is also a science teacher, have three boys.
  • Stephen VanHoesen
    Assistant Coach
Stephen began his time at Pomfret in the 2021-22 school year. He is a member of the science department, primarily teaching chemistry, assistant football coach, Form Dean, Dorm Head for Picerne House, and Coordinator of Social Media Programming. He graduated from Hobart College with a Bachelor of Science in geoscience and a minor in chemistry and participated on the Football Team. He then earned a Master of Science in chemistry from Ohio University. He is passionate about geochemistry—specifically plastic pollution, pollutant remediation, and water chemistry. He also enjoys fishing, hiking, attending concerts, playing guitar, and cooking. Stephen resides on campus in Picerne House with his wife, Amy VanHoesen, who also teaches science at Pomfret, their son Leon, and their dog, Wilma.

  • Gabriel Qua
    Assistant Coach
Raised in a family of educators, Gabe grew up with nightly dinner table conversations about what he learned at school that day and quizzes about the US presidents. His father, a high school history teacher, and his mother, an elementary art teacher, instilled in him a deep respect for both creativity and critical thought. A lifelong athlete, Gabe found his second home on the basketball court, a passion that led him to play college basketball at Lasell University. It was there that he discovered how powerful the intersection of teaching, coaching, and mentorship could be. Now in his first year as both a teacher and coach, Gabe is excited to build strong relationships and help students grow both in and out of the classroom
