Saving Humanity with the Humanities: A Skills-Based Approach

WHAT ARE UNIQUELY HUMAN SKILLS? How might we teach them in humanities classrooms? Join us to develop strategies for teaching and assessing the human skills — like discussion, question-asking, critical thinking, and analytical writing — students need to succeed in our AI world. We will stoke the communication-skills conversation with everything from research to case studies and design exercises. The week will begin by discussing discussion — including certification in R.E.A.L. Discussion — and then we will turn our attention to writing. Whether you are imagining a cross-divisional program or building pedagogy for your own classroom, you will leave with usable language, flexible frameworks, and high-value tools — having laughed hard along the way. Start the summer with the fall already planned...and a community of humanities nerds by your side!

Monday, June 17 – Friday, June 21, 2024
Pomfret School | Pomfret, CT

Set on a stunning hilltop in rural Northeastern Connecticut, Pomfret has been called one of the most beautiful schools in the world. Studded by maples and ringed by stone walls, our 500-acre Hilltop campus exudes New England charm. As a guest of the Grauer Institute, you will be housed in a private room overlooking the heart of campus. A commuter option, which offers a cost reduction of $250, is also available. Rooms are single occupancy with access to a shared bathroom. Double-occupancy rooms are available upon request. All linens are provided. Both the dorm and commuter options include all your meals. In addition, you'll have access to the school’s fitness center, wooded trail system, yoga studio, tennis center, and squash courts. Your registration fee also includes complimentary airport transfers to and from PVD, BDL, and BOS. It's a pretty good deal!

Monday

You’ll get set up in your dorm room, then dive into R.E.A.L. Discussion training with Liza, followed by a cocktail hour and gourmet dinner at Pomfret's dining hall.

Tuesday

Continue getting R.E.A.L. with the cohort — learning to cultivate, measure, and celebrate “conversation culture” in your classroom. Also – trivia night!

Wednesday

Break into discipline-specific groups — English, history, or humanities — to apply your learning to the written word.

Thursday

Put theory into practice, redesigning curriculum and receiving feedback.

Friday

Spend the morning reflecting on your experience, sharing one last round of feedback, and celebrating the good work we've done together!
